I had actually double-checked Girl Shy (the sleepwalker episode) before posting my question and there's no mention of Goober's place of residence in that episode. As far as a character saying they "lived in one room," Barney says this to Andy in the Miracle Salve episode, in an attempt to get Andy to buy his five packs of old flower seeds.
Speaking of the "Girl Shy" episode, in the opening scene Aunt Bee and Helen and Andy are talking about a Chinese restaurant, and they discuss how Chinese restaurants serve additional dishes to larger groups (I assume this custom is the origin of the title "With Six You Get Eggroll" — but I digress). In real life, I have never heard of a restaurant that refuses to serve a particular menu item to a smaller group of diners. Did Chinese eateries actually do this is the 1960s? I was just a little tyke then and I don't recall ever eating at a Chinese restaurant until the 1980s.
