***In real life, I have never heard of a restaurant that refuses to serve a particular menu item to a smaller group of diners. Did Chinese eateries actually do this is the 1960s?***
It could be that they're still available to diners who ask for them and just not on the menu, but they're included at no extra charge or as part of a special. In "With Six You Get Eggroll," I assumed the kid who said that (when the family was eating at a Chinese restaurant) meant free eggroll.
