I didn't forget Nellie when I compiled my list of major characters who were seen locked in a cell in the Mayberry Jail. Yes, the unknown woman whom Andy addresses as "Nellie" (he most likely simply ad libbed the line) appears in many episodes, but for all we know she may have been playing a different character every time she appeared. My original question was about --_characters_ who appeared in more than five episodes, not _actors_ who appeared more than five times.
For the same reason I did not count Mary Lansing, who played something like a dozen different characters. As Ms. Primrose, she sold Opie a pair of stockings. As Ms. Lukens, she sold a bed jacket that Andy picked up for Mayor Stoner. As Ms. Mason, she bought stuff from peddler Bert Miller. She also played Ms. Tarbochs, Ms. Rodenbacher, Martha Clark, etc., but none of those characters appeared five separate times.
