Gomer frequently misused firearms; Andy even had to tell him not to put one in his mouth. He also dropped a long gun from the courthouse roof more than once (The Big House) and pointed a gun at Otis as a joke (High Noon in Mayberry).
Old Asa didn't exactly abuse his old Teddy Roosevelt horse pistol (whatever that is), but he definitely didn't care for it nor his ammunition properly. He allowed it to get wet and moldy, and he went four years without replacing missing screws. Speaking of the courthouse gun rack, in TV or not TV we see Barney put a gun into the rack without removing the bar, so even if it had been kept locked at all times (which it wasn't) anybody could still take the guns out. Also speaking of that scene, it is the only time we ever seen Barney wearing his cap with the chin strap in place under his chin.
