I've always known that Everett Sloan (Jubal Foster in "Keeper of the Flame") wrote the lyrics to "The Fishing Hole," and had always thought it unusual that a character actor such as Everett would be the one to do that.
Listening to a CBS Radio Workshop episode from 1962, I heard Everett in an adaptation of Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi story, "The Green Hills of Earth." Everett not only starred in this story about space travel but, oddly enough, also sang. Further research yielded that Everett was a songwriter, having written songs for Broadway shows in which he appeared. So, it appears ol' Jubal had some talent in that area. I would be interested in knowing just how that all happened. Did Everett approach Andy about it beforehand? Did he just write it and present it to Andy? Did his appearance on the show inspire him to write the lyrics? I don't recall having read any such details in any of the books. Does anyone here on the Digest have any information on how it came about? dan --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast!
