Here in Tennessee and I'm sure it still holds true in North Carolina like it did where I grew up, you must have a tight lid. However, venting is a different proposition entirely. If we used a lid with a copper pipe coming out of the top that curls round and round, and let the squeezin's, uh drippin's collect in a jug or a jar, it makes for some mighty fine possum gravy!
