I met someone last weekend who grew up in Manteo and had done work on Andy & Cindi Griffith's property when they were building their new home. She told me how nice he was to deal with while they were working there. They cleared the land for the homesite and he would take them out on his Gator ATV and show them select trees where he wanted the pines cleared out around them. I believe they did a lot of the landscape installation as well. Mount Airy native Chip Calloway did the landscape design for them (and the Andy Griffith Museum). Also, when she was younger, she said the property manager would let her and friends come on to the 75 acre property to play while Andy was out of town (shhhhh... don't tell).
