I never lived in a small town - but in a town the size of Mayberry and a police force of only two - how can both Andy and Barney continually be off duty together and out of communication with - I guess Sarah?
They are at dances, dinners, traveling and on and on throughout the series together morning, afternoon and nights - who is safe guarding the town? As illogical as this is to me - it is strangely endearing to me, as by implication it makes Mayberry a uniquely safe, secure and for the most part crime-free living environment.
