I think when I took driver's training in 1969, we were taught to get out of
the car on the curb side so we would not open the door on the traffic side
and we could do that with bench seats. Now, we have single seats and cannot
do that. In Mayberry that seems like a non-issue but I'm sure Barney would
find reason to give you a ticket if you opened the door on the street side.
Ellie did see the nonsense in this when Barney worked his way out between
the car door and a mail box. She asked Barney if he couldn't get out on the
other side but he was already half way out. Seems like there may have been
an episode or two where the street side door was used.
