Watch the episode again and you will recall Parnell did not know Opie found the
purse. Opie never mentions the purse when they meet in the court house. Andy
gave it to his wife when he and Barney drove to his home. When Parnell arrives
his wife announces that the sheriff came to return the wallet with all the
money in it but it was never mentioned that Opie found it. As far as Parnell
is concerned the sheriff would be the one who deserves a reward. But
considering how life was "back on those days", it was a courtesy to return
something found without expecting a reward and usually no reward was offered,
especially by someone(s) who appeared to be quiet poor, such as the Rigsbys.
