Here is a list of summer things I did as a child growing up in a very small
town in the '50's. Great memories.

Swimming in a creek that was full of leeches and snails.

Watching free movies outside on the walls of the feed store.

Playing a game of baseball with no adults around to settle our disputes.

Walking the railroad tracks to the next town that was four miles away.

Fishing at the old mill pond.

Hanging around the train depot watching the bums jump out of the boxcars.

Going on hayrides with my friends from school.

Riding my bike all over town having water balloon fights.

Playing with my toy guns and shooting my BB gun.

Stopping at the drug store for a nickel ice cream cone or coke.

Going to the town dump in search of pop bottles to return for 2 cents each.

Riding our bikes over the rubber cord by the gas pumps to make the bell
ring.

Playing outside under the street lamps late after dark.

Sweating while trying to sleep because we had no air conditioning or fans.

Selling Kool Aid on the corner for 3 cents a glass.

Trading marbles with my friends.

Playing mumbly peg with the jackknife that I always carried. ( even to
school )

Roasting hot dogs on a stick in the back yard.

Camping in the woods nearby using a blanket for a tent.

These are just some of the many things that my friends and I did during the
long and lazy days of summer. Now as I sit outside during the day
I rarely see a child outside playing. And if I do, most of them are
confined to their own yards because of all the dangers that are now lurking
everywhere
in our modern society.
