Asking why Barney said "don't stop for anything", My parents were from NC and my father hitched from Clemson College to Rutherfordton, NC where he was from. My grandmother picked up a service man in the 60"s and he was nice, but told her not to do that again for her own safety. So maybe it was a safety issue to not pick up hitch hickers.
