In that era, well, in the era that was considered Mayberry, it was still quite 
the custom to ask the "man" of the family for a lady's hand. Heck, even in 
1997, my 30 year old nephew asked his beloved's father for his future wife's 
hand in marriage. It may be out dated but I think that tells a lot about a man, 
who would consider the family's consideration.
