On Labor Day I celebrated my 70th birthday with a group of 40 friends who
my wife invited to our house for a party. Many of the guests were "car
show friends" so our street was lined with old classic cars and other
vintage vehicles. I had to give a number of tours of our basement family
room as that is where all my Mayberry items are displayed. They were in
awe of all my trophies and TAGS memorabilia and I had to explain where and
how I obtained all the items. This of course led to a lot of talk about
favorite TAGS characters and episodes. And of course my big cake had an
edible photo of my squad car as well as a number of Mayberry Deputy
badges. The cake was even engraved with "70" on it. So all in all it was
a very emotional packed night. The only downer was that the day before I
learned of the death of a friend who I had taught with for 30 years and who
was my age. So all I can say about all this is, "The tears on my pillow
bespeak the pain in my heart".
