Small towns in the 60s still had party lines and used operators. My small town did into the late 60s. We had a two party line but had to pay more. There were party lines with more than two party. Not sure when the operator went away. Around 1964 or so my Dad finally got tired of the other person listening in on our conversations and paid extra and got us a private line.
