Hi Paul!
I'm with you on that! It's my favorite of Don's movies too. When I was a kid,
it was even a little scary (esp when Kelsey turns around slowly when playing
the organ, hunched over).
The picnic speech (with the paper notes flapping agains the microphone, only to
be swept away ('gone with the wind')) was excellent and always leaves me
gasping for air!! :)
I got to enjoy the tail end of it on Saturday night, and I couldn't help but
wonder if Don was hurt by the impact of Reta Shaw's purse (did she have a brick
in it?)!
The interesting thing is that the scary parts are played very straight, which
adds to the ambiance. :)
The music is classic...who can think of the movie without thinking of Vic
Mizzy's organ music? Even the opening "Universal Saturn" clip is scored to
blend with the movie..
Nydia Westman did a great job with "And they used Bon Ami." I saw her in
another scary film: with Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard in "The Cat and the
Canary" from 1939.
Burt Mustin then shakes his hand, after handing Luther the flashlight...cracks
me up!
Allan did a great 2 part "Two Chairs No Waiting" (episodes 159 and 160) just on
"The Ghost and Mr Chicken" back in 2011.
