I spent this afternoon helping to write a proposal to replace the bridge on US 64 over the Ocoee River in Tennessee and got to thinking about the opportunity I had years back to be a part of a design team for what became North Carolina's longest bridge - the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge on US 64 over the Croatan Sound into Manteo (623 miles between them). When the bridge opened, Andy Griffith was the first person to drive across it in his 1935 Packard. The trivial triviality of the story came from an engineer from NCDOT who told me Andy had actually driven across the bridge a few times before the Press arrived because he wanted to make sure his car could actually make it! It is not particularly steep, but a long grade up to the top. The highest point on the bridge is 65' above high tide. So 65 feet is roughly a six story building. We know the Mayberry Courthouse has offices upstairs and the hotel has at least two floors (high enough you need a rope to climb out the window).... Any thoughts on the tallest building in Mayberry?
