This might be my favorite episode of all. For what it's worth, Maryann, my guess is that the birds in the cage which Opie releases at the end are alive. He seems very careful when getting them out of the cage, and I seem to recall seeing the shadow of fluttering wings when at least one of them flies away. As far as poor Mama Bird - I have no idea - hopefully it was a stuffed bird.
