I didn't see Floyd as being so much immersed in sympathizing with Madeline as I see Andy breaking the law, taking advantage of a friend by invading the home of someone who trusted Andy to take care of it. As pointed out on IMDB episode review - Andy broke the law above breaking the trust of a town resident. Would you ever trust Andy again with the keys to your home? I sure wouldn't. Bottom line - there was trust broken and deception among everyone but Opie.
