Hello the list One of the departments at our agency wants to put some Excel spreadsheets on its Intranet site but make sure people can't make changes & then save the edited versions back to the server. Fair enough. Problem is, whenever somebody clicks on a link to a spreadsheet, it opens in the browser, they make their changes, hit save - & overwrite the previous version. We've tried setting the file attributes to read-only, but then when someone clicks on the link & opens it, the file changes back.
We don't get this problem with Word docs - is there something about the way IE opens Excel documents that's different from the way it handles other Office files? I should mention that the Intranet server is just another machine on our network. If you pick your way to it through Network Neighborhood you can map a drive to it & so on. But you can't just open, edit & save files that are set to read-only that way - only spreadsheets, & only if you get to them through a web page link. Anybody seen this before?
