I am not sure I understood your problem. But, you are welcome to check our solution on 
http://portalfreeportal.com/ . One of the links on the first page, "XML-to-Excel 
Transformation" will demonstrate to you an XML-based publishing with data 
transformation from the text to Excel spreadsheet on the fly and ability to maintain 
intact the master-copy.
