In fact, the database theorists wouldn't beat you up.  It's the people
who 
build databases without understanding the theory who go around beating 
people up.  And, sadly, I encounter them frequently as a jobbing 
consultant.  When I say 'Why do you have this autonumber as your primary

key when the customer number is a unique index?' they look at me in a
way 
that makes me glad we're not in a dark alley.

Heh.  :-)  Same problem here.  One guy couldn't get two tables to join
the way he wanted so he made a third table and duplicated a whole bunch
of data out to it, thinking the first attempt was too complex for the
machine. <sigh>

FWIW, in the database I use to drive our website, I have several tables
without autoincrements or primary keys or indexes.  They're just "link"
tables that provide a connection between two other tables.  I got to
design the whole thing so it's quite satisfying.
