Yup, or just editing your startup/run-level scripts (when programs whould
start and in which mode).  If they're not running, you don't need to worry
about blocking the ports...

If you run a service like FTP, just subscribe to the programmers list (most
of them have one) and any exploits that are found or patches that are
released will be identified in an email to you.  also,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (I think that's right) is where all the latest
exploits are posted...
