Is he right? Yes and no. ZA etc are not strictly firewalls, which should be standalone boxes. Will most users do a standalone? No. Setting up Linux or BSD is way beyond most home users.
Is ZA etc useless? No. They do detect attempts to log onto your machine. Is some of it just normal network activity (isp pings, portscans, etc) -- yes. Do most admins ignore reports from home users -- yes. Does that mean you should do nothing because admins can be arrogant (which will ultimately make them stupid as well) - no. Is it better to have NAT and a personal firewall -- yes. If you have broadband, use both. On a modem, still use the personal even with changing ip's. Can't have too much security given the poor quality of windows security. Better to have good security than poor, but any is better than none. -----Original Message----- From: Diane Schips [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, September 18, 2002 10:19 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [wdvltalk] Firewall question If I remember right, firewalls have been discussed here before. I know I've seen ZoneAlarm recommended several times by several sources, maybe here, maybe not. Please take a look at the following: http://www.samspade.org/d/firewalls.html. Any opinions about this?
