Pardon me if I shouldn't be here trying to help because I haven't used XP
yet. But in my humble experience with 98, Me, I did encountered several
times with the situation that some running program suddenly stopped and
froze up, then with or without a dialog box, the program wouldn't close
(mouse click on X in vain). Although I could close other programs still
running, the troubled program just wouldn't close or recover. The only old
trick I took other than push the "reset" button was to press
"Ctrl"+"Alt"+"Delete" and I got a dialog box telling me the troubled
program (with check mark to i.d.) is running improperly and will be shut
down. There are 3 or more buttons for you to choose for what you want to
do with the problem. If I choose "Yes", the system closes the
program. Sometimes, mouse click won't do the job to choose the button and
I have to press the "Enter" key to choose "Yes" (it's the
recommended). Doesn't this work in XP too?
