Andrew, thanks for the references! They may prove to be very valuable when I get around to increasing my RAM to 1 or 1.5 gig. It appears from the articles that problems for Win98 begin above the 512MB mark, but are overcomeable with some system.ini settings.
I printed out the articles (and several others recommended within them) for future reference. You may have helped me to avoid some headaches during any future RAM expansions with them. I guess I haven't run into them because I have yet to break the 512MB barrier. BTW, the system I had 384MB on was using a 1996 Tyan motherboard with a P133 and 3 128MB PC100 SDRAMs. I'd always heard they were good back in '96 - just didn't realize how good until reading this. Currently, I'm using an AZZA MB with an Athlon XP 1600+ processor and one 512MB PC133 SDRAM. I built both systems myself from the ground up. :) Thanks, Tom At 01:26 PM 10/21/2002 -0400, you wrote:
Tom, quick survey would indicate incomplete recall on my part. The 196 memory issues seems to be tied to motherboard chipsets. Which means this would likely be older BX chipsets. So circa 1998-99 the drop off in performance gain was probably the case but is not relevant to more recent motherboard/chipset combinations. The issue, then, is what will your chipset and motherboard support at least until you get to 512. See Q304943 for a discussion of 1gig or more with 98. And Q253912 for possible issues at and above 512. andy
