The M$ site most likely does it with a devious ActiveX control that you have to agree to download and execute (or at least you should be asked, if you've got your permissions set up correctly).
That's the only real way you'd be able to do it - at the end of the day, ASP is a *server-side* scripting language, which outputs standard HTML to the browser. ASP on it's own cannot read a user's hard-drive. Do you have a *very* good reason for wanting your code to be able to read a user's hard drive? Most users would never agree to this - I never accept ActiveX controls or anything like that anyway.
