http://evolt.org/entities shows that's the right code for a macron, but it
doesn't have a letter underneath it - at least, not in IE6/Win2k.

I notice that dictionary.com uses images for these:
http://cache.dictionary.com/dictionary/graphics/AHD4/GIF/omacr.gif

(look up "food", for example) - If this is good enough for you it might be
an easy way out :-)
