Sally Firewalls: software and hardware devices that filter and block specified types of incoming messages and files ( e.g. viruses ) from a standalone computer or network.
Not limited to virus protection, they can also mask open ports on the computer/ network, block html email, email with attachments, only allow specified senders to communicate with the network. Usually for the ordinary user firewalls are software programs, but more complex networks and more paranoid/safety conscious users would use a combination of software and hardware solutions. I suspect you probably have a combination something like: Router > Proxy Server > Router > Network, where the routers and , proxy server, and network will all have levels of software protection as well, antivirus, port hiding or closure, message screening and file scanning. Knowledge Base: without you being a little more specific it is difficult to offer any on topic suggestions [ if you could there a lot of people on the list who may well have been there and done that ], but may be you don't feel able to which is fine , however some general comments: Libraries have been sorting and cataloguing for centuries, chances are that your requirements are paralleled by some library, general or technical somewhere. Specialist knowledge bases if technical tend to fall into standard "industry" categories, check your internal hard copy library if you have one and see how the 'textbooks' are arranged by topic and subject, and how the text books themselves are arranged by subject. Lock up your computer, get out your white board and list of users and really identify the areas, categories, and user requirements, AND get the users to sign off on them, then and only then start thinking about what your software requirements are. Resources: Google Search engine is your friend provided you can phrase the right questions, and be prepared to spend some time learning to 'ask the right question'. Given that you are organised by alphabetical major groups you may want to look at this: http://webdirectory.natlib.govt.nz/ and another one would be the New York City Library ( which also sets guidelines for html and css pages which you are free to copy), don't have the reference handy sorry. You may also want to consider whether you need an internal search engine, this may require standardisation of input or at least standard "abstract" creation for every contribution for the knowledge base. Another point you may want to look at is whether the KB should be database driven and/or whether there are off the shelf solutions for your requirements, for example content management systems, do a google search for newspaper CMS to get an idea of what I am talking about. Finally, IMHO whatever you do, the structure of what you do is as important as 'how' you do it, so it must make sense on paper, or whiteboard, before you tap those computer keys. It doesn't matter in the end of the containers are a mish mash if the users can access the information in them easily and efficiently! - look at the internet after all, lol ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sally Watson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, January 02, 2003 4:12 AM Subject: [wdvltalk] HELP > > The Knowledge Base I am trying to revise, rebuild, is a serious mish mash - > hodge podge - a bloody mess, whatever your particular vernacular dictates, > of text files - files created in Front Page 2000, and file created in > something called ARACHNOPHILIA - what the HELL is this ??? > > I am working on a VERY secure intranet, ONLY running Internet Explorer > version 5.0 & 5.5, I am sorry I can not give you the (URL) - is this the > correct name?
