I've noticed that many "big name" web sites don't get anywhere close
to validating. My theory is that this can be blamed on various content
management systems. Either software is being used by non-tech types to
fill in templates or psuedo-xml style file conversions are providing
more or less HTML coded pages. You would think that the bigger the
budget, the more likely they'd be to spend the time and concern on
quality web pages. But I know, that spending all my time with making
web pages, I'm a bit biased. :)
