If your start button is on the left, and the "quick launch"
icons on the right, yes, right-clicking and selecting exit
will close the programs until the next time you start up your
computer, and then they're back.

Using Start/Run then type "msconfig" (without the quotes) and
click ok. This will bring up System Configuration Utility.
Make sure that the program you're about to remove from the
Start Up command is not one you definitely need to use, Go
to the tab Startup.

You will see a list of the Startup Items and can unclick the
ones you don't want, but leave SysTray checked.

I have unchecked aim, msmsgs, qttask, RealPlay, and Winampa
because I don't want them on the System Tray. If you have
Windows XP (I'm not sure that other versions of Windows does
this), the next time you start up your computer, you will get
a dialog box that says something about you changing the system
configuration. Don't do anything that it tells you to do.

I think there's a "cancel", or "no", or "don't bother me",
something but don't do what it suggests, just cancel or close
it and next time you start up, you won't get that message and
those extra icons that you don't want on your System Tray will
be gone.

Now, bear in mind that if you open any of those programs that
you have unchecked in the config system, you might find the
quick launch icon in the tray again, just repeat the procedure.
