"Operating System Not Found" is the message you usually get if you try rebooting your machine halfway through a rebuild, when you've formatted the hard drive but haven't put the new OS on yet. Have a go at booting it with a startup floppy and see if you can browse the hard drive via DOS - if you use NTFS instead of FAT, google for a copy of NTFS4DOS to do this. If it's an NT, 2000 or XP, and you're happy with your backups, try booting with the Windows installation CD in the drive and select "Repair installation".
