According to Opera (knowledge base through the online help in the browser) problems with javascript come from 2 sources: 1. bug in the browser and 2. proprietary extensions in the javascript written for particular browsers (surprise surprise -- IE and Netscape 4 primarily). The first is probably not the cause. Untangling the second is more daunting.
This has to do with the ECMAScript standard and the proprietary nature of much of javascript and jscript.
