Hi Abigail,

I apologize for the delay in response...things are crazy around here. I
took a look at the alternative layout and I like it very much. The link
is prominent enough that it won't get lost in the shuffle, yet it
doesn't detract from the menu. Good job.

Let us know once it is completely finished!

Will Stewart

Will, I want to clarify my other answer to you.

The page with the browser-sniffer is under development, and
I have been working several months on getting the FUNCTION
to work - that is, getting the javascript working,
cross-browser checking, etc. LAYOUT is something I hadn't
given much thought to -- for testing purposes, it was
easiest for me to have the form near the top of the page
where I could see it and work with it easily. Also, because
of a technical reason related to the way the script itself
is coded, the it is difficult to move the color/font
changing forms around, as depending on their position on the
page, the javascript may need to be recoded with various
layout adjustments.

I hadn't even intended to ask for a site review of this page
yet, except I mentioned the form in another context, and
when Rudy got an error message on the form - I remembered
that I had a buggy browser sniffer in place. That got me
motivated to fix the browser sniffer, and once I had done
that I wanted to test it.

Your comment about layout is very useful, and actually
prompted me to develop an alternative layout which I will
probably adopt:
http://www.dyslexia.com/build/index4.html
(Note, the "Customize Site" button does NOT work - this page
has been redone for purposes of layout only).

I think your comment about layout was helpful and
important. You should know that what I am doing is
redesigning the interface at http://www.dyslexia.com/

I am working with a situation where basically I'm trying to
take our site into the 21st century (The Wayback Machine at
archive.org tells me that those hokey graphic navigation
buttons were on the site back in December 1998).

I'm working with a situation where I want to make some big
changes, but for reasons of usability I don't want to make
them too drastic -- that is, we don't want the new interface
to scare away the users who are used to the "old" (current)
one. This is a site for dyslexia - 46% of our site visitors
say that they are dyslexic - which is why the users are
going to be delighted with the site customization form, but
they won't be able to find it without a very prominent link.
I'm also sure to get a few complaints from users who will
miss the picture-based navigation - even though the new
array is much more compatible with screen readers.

Anyway, I do want to thank you - it is helpful to me to have
feedback on overall usability. It will still be awhile
before changes go live, because it is a big site and I have
to upgrade all the pages to be CSS-compliant and recognize
the style-changing cookie - but it's good for me to have
constructive feedback along the way.

-Abigail
