The "patent violations" only apply to embedded video.  The sort of link
that started this thread, a direct link to a video or metafile that opens
a player, is not covered.

What is covered seems to be video embedded in a webpage through activex or
the netscape plugin system.  The workaround from MS is to script the embed
in ASP "outside" the HTML.
