Hi,

To go along w/my idea for adding an external drive and asking for recommendations as to brand (in my previous post) I also need to know a few other things.

Right now my computer I believe has USB1 ports. I have one USB2 cable connected to it that goes to my printer. If I want to run -anything- USB2, should I swap out that USB1 port on the computer for a USB2 or Firewire? Did adding a USB2 cable to run my printer on to a USB1 port have any effect on USB2 speed or is it running at the USB1 speed because the port is USB1?

Will my USB2 printer cable run on a Firewire port?

When choosing a drive to add as the external, I'm running XP Home version. I don't seem to find in the Device Manager what type of hard drive is in there now. IDE or EIDE or ??? whatever. If someone would tell me what to look for please? Then also tell me, do I have to match the drive specs that are there for the current internal drive to the specs for an external?

I'm getting the feeling all I have to do is buy an external drive and a USB cable of some kind, plug the USB cable into the existing computer and the new external hard drive and voila ... plugnplay should read it and give it the right drive letter and then I install any external drive software and I'm good to go. How close is this to reality for a hardware dummy? Please tell me any adaptors I may need.

Thanks!
Deb
