Rita:

However, if you're doing this course to make yourself more attractive to
employers you should consider which skill is more marketable. Running a few
searches on job sites to see what sort of work is out there might make the
decision a lot easier :-)

I guess what I was asking is was what everyone thinks is more in demand XML or PHP skills? I would rather get the answer from working professionals than a search engine ;-)

On the other hand, you could probably buy decent books on both PHP and XML for a lot less than the cost of one course ;-)

while i agree, but the problem is finding the time to do that. with my situation, actually having to get out of the house to take a course would probably be more effective. If i had to wait until the baby was asleep to study I would probably fall asleep at the keyboard.

Practicalities: it's worthwhile trying to find another mother in your area who's in the same position & work out swapping some childcare time. Advertising on library notice boards is one way of finding one. I did this for a year when my son (who 's now grown up) was a year old so that I had time to study as did my friend. She had my son in the mornings, I had two of hers in the afternoons. Neither of us could have afforded childcare fees on top of course fees! Both of us got a lot of work done, & kept our brain cells alive. It's good for the kids too - 'sharing ' being an alien concept to one two year old on its own - though you have to be ruthless & single minded about using the time on your own for studying.
