I wish that I could buy a book on ASP or JavaScript or anything really in which the HTML examples conformed to current, or at least recent standards. There really is no reason for a book on ASP to include HTML with "font" elements.
I wish that this were also true of some of the advice columns on the Internet, especially as newbies are learning stuff that they really don't need to know and that may eventually cause them problems if they lift code and use it on their own pages.
I wish more clients will be aware of the difference between web designers and web developers. There are people on this list whose strengths are in design and who struggle a little with code, and there are people like me, who couldn't design a really good web page to save their lives. Some people can do both, and clients are lucky to get them. But often they need a different person for the design and for the code.
I wish also that clients would work out what their really want a web page to do before they embark on either design or development. This wish is linked to a wish that usability becomes a less prominent driver. Some clients had web sites that did not satisfy their customers' and prospects' needs and they have transformed them into highly usable web sites that still don't meet their customers' and prospects' needs. I wish that more clients would call in consultants more often to help them work out what their web site is really for.
I wish also that clients who need high positions in search engines would employ specialists to help them achieve and keep those positions.
I wish Flash and other animations would disappear from home pages. They are excellent for guiding visitors through a process or demonstrating a product to them, but the action should be inside the site and specifically requested by visitors.
I wish that people who stop declaring that viruses, worms and other creepy-crawlies will kill the Internet and that spam will kill email. It's like saying that offers from The Reader's Digest will kill the postal service. I know that we expected that the Internet was going to be a brave new world, but there are always people who will try to mess up your party. Jehovah's Witnesses and political canvassers haven't killed off the door-bell.
I wish that we will all continue to contribute to and learn from this list and to ignore any petty squabbles along the way.
Regards, David
