Did you ever sit next to me on the sub-editors' table in the days of hot metal?
a longstanding dream of mine, alas, still unfulfilled
it's funny, i had a similar conversation recently elsewhere (about errors in english usage and spelling)
here's what i wrote --
the reason i am able to catch so many spelling and grammar errors is because i received my public school primary grade education in the 1950's, when they actually taught you spelling and grammar
it's kind of like the following similar situation with regard to math:
THE EVOLUTION OF A MATH PROBLEM
1950: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is four-fifths of this price. What is his profit?
1960: (traditional math) A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is four-fifths of this price, or in other words, $80. What is his profit?
1970: (new math) A logger exchanges a set L of lumber for a set M of money. The cardinality of M is 100 and each element of M is worth $1. Make 100 dots representing the elements of M. The set C is a subset of the set M, of cardinality 80. What is the cardinality of the set P of profits, if P is the difference set M\C?
1980: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80, and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.
1990: By cutting down beautiful forest trees, a logger person makes $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? In your group, discuss how the forest birds and squirrels feel, and write an essay about it.
