Ohh, the heartbreak of typos! After correcting a spelling mistake, the reference is working with the leading slash ... feeling stupid now :)

Hrmm... that works on *nix and winbloze for me. How odd. So... lets say the root of your web site is:
D:\wwwroot\mysite
and your stylesheet is at:
D:\wwwroot\mysite\styles\mystyles.css
A root-relative link such as:
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/styles/mystyles.css" />
Does not work?
What OS is your server currently running? Curious indeed. You may try this link on Root Relative Adresses:
