Hi Riva, I use Elance quite often and have made far, far more than I spend on their fees. Actually I get about half of my clients through elance. You have to take the time to create a great portfolio, fill out your profile and if you can...submit references. If you do that then you will probably do pretty good on there. You have to be selective in your bidding. There are a lot of low ballers and it does no good to try to compete with them. Just pass those projects on by. Also, go ahead and pay the yearly fee if you can. It is WAY cheaper!
I have found other services online that are similar, but so far none that compare in any way, shape or form.
