Don't know about the UK, but my ADSL provider (Cincinnati, OH, USA) is
apparently agnostic with respect to CPE. They provide a Cisco 675, but
you're free to go to Walmart or Radio Shack, or... and pick up anything that
is compatible with their provisioning. I have friends who have bought
various brands of wireless access points (WAPs) and connected them to their
line, then plugged their PCCard wireless NICs into their laptops and surfed
away, no problem. A few who have gone with NetGear equipment have had some
configuration issues, but I believe that that was more on NetGear than a
problem with the ISP or the provisioning. As always, YMMV... ;-)
