I am following the conversation and it is helping greatly in expanding my awareness; I am sure others working through the php/mysql learning zone would agree.
Thank you Rudy for the additional points on extracting addresses. I didn't make it clear then as the book had been hurled through the window at that point (not really, it's too cold at the moment to open the window). Bj, A main reason for coming back on this point (and I'll do the same on others, as they arise) is that there are quite a few who teach on the list. I am finding all tutorials falling short of their stated aims; I have no access to advice other than this list. For that reason my experience and feelings about ploughing through may be of help in constructing courses and articles (I know Sheila is planning something). You are right about the table, and I already wondered why one should use NULL values. But this table was a 'given' and downloaded as a basis for the SQL course book. There is, too, a vast difference between someone learning these codes with ASP or C++ or other coding experience and one - like me - who has managed some html and css and just basic ssi. One thing, for example, that is extremely depressing, is the advice (or only option) time after time to refer to the manual. Only now am I coming out of the stage where the manuals are gobbledegook. An experienced user, I am sure, sees them as invaluable references - as I soon shall. Because different SQLs are developed differently there are gulfs between the syntax and keywords and functions that are totally confusing, and without the kindness of you and Rudy and others I for one would have found the inadequacy of the literature enough to stop me in my tracks. When, worse, a 'comprehensive' tutorial using the same forms of coding (mysql/php) throws up errors the frustration becomes a solid thing! But that is for a little later. Once I have MySQL moderately understood I will be better placed to get back to that.
