Absolutely right, Bj. All of my home machines save one (which I deliberately
keep set up with IE 5.5 and OE 5 for testing) have had the latest
updates/patches applied now, although I had applied the one which added the
"Read all messages in plain text" option to OE's Read tab only within the
last few months. You are correct that this option will permit viewing safely
even messages with embedded HTML, scripts, etc. I proposed the "no preview"
method because I receive a number of industry-specific and hobbyist (e.g.
Woodworker's Journal) newsletters in HTML format, and this method works
while still permitting me to read these newsletters intact. Also, as seems
evident from some of the replies, not everyone is up-to-date with their
patches, so this method will be available as an alternative until they bring
themselves up-to-date.

Lastly, there's just plain old force of habit. I've been using the no
preview pane method for years, long before MS finally decided to address the
issue, and have become accustomed to the method described. It does take
about five clicks to actually view a message using Properties, and although
they've become unthinking second-nature to me by now, others might find that
irritating.

Cheers,
Scott
