I believe you're right. I'm thinking of another option from an equipment I've seen recently. Basically it can listen on specified ports on all subnets simultaneously and act as the desired server for common protocols like smtp/pop. Basically you put it on your lan and if your pop server is 192.168.234.56 it listens on that IP on port 110 and replies as being YOUR pop server. You send your email as auth and it grabs it...
