more specifically, you need to surround them with singlequotes

in every database except microsoft access, which uses octothorps instead

one more pecadillo:  mysql insists on a year-month-day sequence for input dates

so even if you wanted to use the php function  date("m-d-Y", time())
you would have to change that format

another mysql feature:  the singlequotes are optional as long as there aren't
any characters like the dash or slash in the date value

so you can say  '2004-06-02'  or 20040602 (or several other variations)

however, using the mysql current_date function is more efficient
