Will, if you just put:

$thing="filename";
include("layout.php");

...then in layout.php you just need to refer to $thing.

For instance I may use the same nav for every page by putting
$thispage="home" on the home page, $thispage="about"...etc immediately
before the include("nav.php"),  then in nav.php I can put:

if ($thispage == "home")
  print ": HOME :";
else
  print ": <a href=home.php>HOME</a> :";

if ($thispage=="about").....
