You should bookmark this page: http://www.w3.org/tr/html4/ Combined with the validator it's a fairly heavyweight reference :-) I'd also suggest you grab yourself a copy of Zeldman's wonderful "Designing with web standards": http://www.happycog.com/pubs/ It's not really a reference book as such, but it's highly readable, very informative, and a must for all web developers IMHO.
