For my blog (some gratuitous advertising here: http://www.williamstewart.org ), I take the philosophy that there are quite possibly other people out there like me. So, I write for me and others like me read and enjoy.
There are several basic elements that are necessary to make it work: 1) Write reasonably well. While less than stellar grammar can be overlooked, spelling errors cannot. 2) Stick to whatever it is that interests you. It goes to my beginning paragraphs: if you like it, chances are someone else will. 3) Stick to your specialty. Not everyone will be a drudgereport.com with hot news every 15 minutes. What do you do well and know well? 4) Be visually pleasing. If your font is not big enough, your text doesn't contrast enough with the background or your lines of text are too long (over 15 words), people will stop reading.
