OS? Does she have Office installed? If so, what version?
There is limited screen reading software in Windows - Narrator
"Using Narrator
Narrator is a text-to-speech utility for people who are blind or have low
vision. Narrator reads what is displayed on the screen-the contents of the
active window, menu options, or text that has been typed.
Narrator is designed to work with Notepad, WordPad, Control Panel programs,
Internet Explorer, the Windows desktop, and some parts of Windows Setup.
Narrator may not read words aloud correctly in other programs. Narrator has
a number of options that allow you to customize the way screen elements are
read. You can:
* Have new windows, menus, or shortcut menus read aloud when they are
displayed.
* Have typed characters read aloud.
* Have the mouse pointer follow the active item on the screen.
* Adjust the speed, volume or pitch of the voice.
We have a blind guy that occasionally attends our user group meetings and he
uses it a lot.
The accessibility tools that ship with Windows are intended to provide a
minimum level of functionality for users with special needs. Most users with
disabilities will need utility programs with more advanced functionality for
daily use."

Microsoft Reader Windows-based PCs and laptops boast accessibility features
that are bringing eBooks to more communities and providing a richer
on-screen reading experience with additional TTS and Verbosity
functionality. To enable Microsoft Reader to take advantage of existing
speech technologies, you must install the new Microsoft Reader
Text-to-Speech (TTS) Package 1.0.

Subject: [wdvltalk] [OT] Looking For Assistive Software Reccomendations
Hi all,
I'm going tomorrow to try to set up an old friend of the family who is blind
and has recently lost her voice (seemingly permanently) with some assistive
software to hopefully make her life a bit easier...
She's been blind since I was a child and is very functional in her day to
day life in dealing with that, however she's just lost her voice entirely,
making it very difficult to communicate at all. She's currently limited to
typing on her laptop and having you read it to communicate.
So... what I'm fishing for is some reccomendations on Text to Speech
converters and possibly an aural web browser. The stipulations being that
I'd like for them to be very user friendly, the most current apps available
and must be free or very low cost (under ~$50 USD combined cost). If you've
got any personal experience or have even heard of anyone having good
experience with software of these types, I'd truly appreciate your feedback.
TIA,
Stephen
